Jared Diamond and Papua New Guinea P.2

Today Mr. Schick had us watch more of the video that we watched last week. Some things that I learned were that wheat and barley can be stored for years which makes it easier for a civilization/a group of people to stay in one place. But, these plants like wheat and barley don't grow in Papua new Guinea which would help explain why they haven't advanced their people in the 40,000 years of the island. The New Guineans only have things like sago and bananas which are found somewhat easily but take a lot of energy and time to process to eat and these foods don't have a lot of nutritional value and are really just a filler. Sometimes, New Guineans would eat giant spiders. There are other plants that are similar to barley and wheat like rice. There are other places around the world that domesticated plants like the Americas and China. Plant domestication was followed up with animal domestication. Animal domestication is pretty much the same thing as plant domestication but with ...

Pop Quiz

Today we had a pop quiz. I mean we're only four days into the semester but that's fine. The pop quiz was pretty easy. It was on the video we watched on Wednesday that was about Jared Diamond and the New Guineans. The quiz was only six questions and the questions were rather simple. Another thing is that he didn't put the questions on a piece of paper which I actually like.  I got a 100% on the quiz. Mr. Schick would say our names and if we wanted to see our grade we would just walk up to him and he'd show us our grade. But if we got a 100%, he would just ring a bell twice to say that the person got a 100%.We also had a shadow in class today. She seems really nice. She does theater which I find interesting. She also like chorus. I hope she comes next year. I've actually had about 14 shadows and I think I'm getting one next week. This is it for this blog.

Jared Diamond and Papua New Guinea

Today in Western Civilization Mr. Schick had us watch a video that I thought was fascinating. A few things I learned is that Papua New Guinea, a country in the south eastern hemisphere where all those small island countries are hasn't really changed throughout about 40,000 years of the island being inhabited which I find amazing. A man named Jared Diamond, a biologist, author, and professor at UCLA went to Papua New Guinea and experienced first-hand what the New Guineans do in an everyday life for them. The New Guineans are much poorer than the modern American and are not nearly as advanced as American technology. A man named Yali asked a question that Jared is determined to find the answer to, "Why you white men have so much cargo and we have so little?" when Yali says "cargo" he really means material goods. Jared originally thought this was a simple question with a simple answer. But as he dug farther into the question, he found out that the question is much m...

First Day

Today is my first day of Western Civilization. My teacher is Mr. Schick. Mr. Schick has already explained most of the rule to us. Like how we can't play video games in class or we will get a detention. We will be learning about western European civilization. So things like Ancient Greece or the Roman Empire. We have a blog every day for the rest of the semester. If I'm not here I only have to say, "I wasn't her because..." and then we submit it. I'm looking forward to this class because I think the Ancient civilizations like Rome and Greece are fascinating because of the importance of them on modern culture. One thing I think he should do is assign a few presentations throughout the semester. The presentations don't have to be hard but should be on certain subjects. For an example, if we are in the subject of Greece, you could break it into several different parts like the philosophers or the wars (break the big subject into smaller subjects) and then assi...
